Wood heat

I've made a number of jokes in past blog posts about rarely turning on the heat during the winter months in our apartment.  Those jokes aren't entirely true but the temperature in our apartment is often below what most other people would consider comfortable and some people may even find it intolerable.  In an effort to use financial and planetary resources responsibly we do our best to first adjust our clothing levels to the temperature before we turn on the heater.

The stories about being able to see our breath in the morning or having ice on the inside of a window in the bathroom are true, but since we have moved in to a more well insulated apartment they are not things we have to deal with any longer.  Also one additional feature of the new apartment that has helped is the fireplace.  LJ's parents have access to a nearly infinite (I would describe it as sustainable) source of firewood and the last time we visited we loaded up our little hatchback with as much wood as we could haul.  After one unsuccessful attempt at building a fire (who knew you had to open a flue?) that turned in to a very successful test of the apartment smoke detectors, we created a perfect fire the second time around.  Now we just need to figure out how to fit more wood in to our car.

I added to our kindling pile so we would be ready for our next fire
